RECYCLE! REUSE!

Battery Recycling

Lead, the most critical raw material in a lead-acid storage battery, is highly recyclable. Recycling an old battery to reclaim its lead content is not only socially and environmentally beneficial, but it also makes perfect economic sense for everyone involved in the value chain.

Battery Waste Management Rules 2022

On August 24, 2022, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, published the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022, to ensure environmentally sound management of waste batteries. These rules apply to:

  • Producers, dealers, consumers, and entities involved in the collection, segregation, transportation, refurbishment, and recycling of waste batteries.

The rules cover all types of batteries, including electric vehicle batteries, portable batteries, automotive batteries, and industrial batteries.

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)

The rules operate under the concept of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), which mandates that battery producers (including importers) are responsible for the collection and recycling/refurbishment of waste batteries, as well as the use of recovered materials in new batteries. EPR requires that all waste batteries be collected and sent for recycling/refurbishment and prohibits their disposal in landfills or incineration.

Return of Used/Old Batteries

When purchasing a new battery, please return your old one to an authorized PowerZone Franchisee/Dealer. Do not throw it in the dustbin—dispose of it responsibly!

BWMR Program

At Amara Raja, we have a dedicated program focusing on waste management. We collect battery waste from the market and send it for recycling, ensuring 100% BWMR compliance.

Lead Recycling by Amara Raja

Lead Facts:
100% Recyclable!

Did You Know?

  • 83% of the lead and lead alloy requirements of Amara Raja are met through recycled lead.
  • Every 10 batteries collected can provide enough lead to produce 6 new batteries.

Fun Facts About Lead and Battery Recycling:

  1. Energy Savings: Recycling lead saves up to 70% of the energy needed to produce lead from raw materials, making it an eco-friendly choice.
  2. Circular Economy: Each recycled battery contributes to a circular economy, reducing the demand for mining new lead and minimizing environmental impact.
  3. Long Life: A lead-acid battery can be recycled multiple times without losing quality, helping to extend its life cycle indefinitely.
  4. Heavy Metal: Lead is one of the most recycled metals in the world, with over 95% of lead in batteries being recoverable and reusable!
  5. Supporting Jobs: The battery recycling industry creates jobs and supports local economies, contributing to sustainable development.
