Lead, the most critical raw material in a lead-acid storage battery, is highly recyclable. Recycling an old battery to reclaim its lead content is not only socially and environmentally beneficial, but it also makes perfect economic sense for everyone involved in the value chain.
On August 24, 2022, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, published the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022, to ensure environmentally sound management of waste batteries. These rules apply to:
The rules cover all types of batteries, including electric vehicle batteries, portable batteries, automotive batteries, and industrial batteries.
The rules operate under the concept of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), which mandates that battery producers (including importers) are responsible for the collection and recycling/refurbishment of waste batteries, as well as the use of recovered materials in new batteries. EPR requires that all waste batteries be collected and sent for recycling/refurbishment and prohibits their disposal in landfills or incineration.
When purchasing a new battery, please return your old one to an authorized PowerZone Franchisee/Dealer. Do not throw it in the dustbin—dispose of it responsibly!
